The Trenchless Sewer: Cutting Edge Plumbing

by | Aug 6, 2014 | Plumbers

The trenchless sewer is a relatively new and largely unknown concept in most construction circles. When a sewer pipe bursts, homeowners are quite often more focused on the problem than thinking of how it will be solved. And, because sewer bursts are an emergency, there is little time to look for viable and more environmentally friendly methods of fixing the pipe.

Most people have had to part with well manicured gardens and precious oak trees in their front yards in order to repair sewers that have been damaged in their homes. It is important to be armed with relevant information on the matter so that, should the problem come up later on, one can be able to go about the repair process more easily.

Trenchless sewers utilize a fairly simple concept of sewer pipe replacement that avoids the process of digging ugly trenches on one’s yard. It is carried out in two ways namely pipe lining and pipe bursting. Pipe lining, which is the most common method, involves the insertion of a flexible tube coated with resin into the existing plumbing. Only one hole is dug in order to reach the existing plumbing. Once inserted, this tube is inflated and allowed to dry, thereby creating a pipe within a pipe. This method cannot be used when the pipe has collapsed completely or contains joints within the system.

Pipe bursting, on the other hand, involves pulling a new pipe through the damaged one, thereby fracturing it outward. This method requires two access holes dug at the beginning and at the end of the sewer line. This method is efficient for pipes that may have collapsed completely within the system. However, it is not recommended for use in various countries that have got their sewer lines close to other utility lines such as gas.

A trenchless sewer can be used as many times as required. It is significantly cheaper than the trench system, and leads to continued savings in the long run.
